State of the art: the opening of the CeBiTec laboratory building

On February 28, 2007, the building of the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) is inaugurated, the first major construction project on the University campus since the completion of the main building in the 1970s. CeBiTec itself was founded in 1998, arising from the Faculty of Biology as a central scientific institution of the University and soon needed more space.

In 1998, the Center was founded as a matter of urgency in order to meet the demand for an intensive, interdisciplinary exchange of biotechnological research in the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Technology. At the same time, a study programme in biotechnology was to be started. Within just a few years, the Center became highly renowned in the Life Sciences both nationally and internationally, which was reflected in several major research projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

On 19 October 2004, the foundation stone was laid for the new CeBiTec building, which is located on the west side of the main University building. The state-of-the-art laboratory building was completed in two and a half years and was finally opened for business in October 2007. The second phase of construction was completed in 2008. The CeBiTec building offers well-equipped laboratories, in particular modern wet laboratories, laboratories for practical student courses, seminar and meeting rooms. CeBiTec’s primary aim is to support its junior research groups by providing laboratory space and the corresponding equipment and infrastructure.
