Helmut Kuzmics was a professor for Sociology at the University of Graz until his retirement in 2013. His focus areas of research are Historical Sociology, Figurational Sociology, Modernity, State-Formation and National Character in Austria and England.

The talk is part of the lecture series „Violence – Change – Transition“, organized by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Conflict and Violence Research (IKG), and the SFB 1288. It seeks to provide an insight into the diverse research approaches, theoretically, methodologically as well as phenomenologically. Scholars from different disciplines and with different focus areas will present their research and provide an understanding of the emergence of violence beyond disciplinary and regional boundaries with a focus on comparing.
The common scope of the lecture series will be the question of how violence, transition, and change relate. The diversity of the talks is meant to offer new perspectives on the emergence of violence at the micro, meso, and macro level.
